Marriage registration

When a citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan marries in a foreign country, the marriage is registered by diplomatic missions and consulates of the Republic of Azerbaijan abroad.

The marriageable age in the Republic of Azerbaijan is set at 18 years for men and 17 years for women.

Citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan who wish to marry must apply in person to the consulates. The authenticity of the signature of the absent party in the application must be certified by the consulate.

Documents required for marriage registration

The following must be submitted to the diplomatic missions and consulates of the Republic of Azerbaijan:

1. written consent of the persons entering into the marriage;

2. copies of documents confirming the identity of the persons entering into the marriage;

3. a document confirming permanent or temporary residence in a foreign country;

4. certificate of singleness;

5. Medical certificate of health from the hospital in the area where you live (on the absence of infectious diseases, HIV infection, Hepatitis, etc.)

6. Receipt for payment of state duty

7. Previously married persons - a certificate of dissolution of marriage (copy) or a certificate of death of the husband (wife), or a legally effective court decision on the invalidity of the previous marriage or an extract from it (only previously married persons);

Application processing period:

The marriage is concluded by the consulate in the presence of the persons wishing to enter into marriage no earlier than 1 month from the date of submission of the application.

Persons applying for marriage must indicate the number of marriages they have entered into and how many children they have, the surname they wish to bear after marriage, and answer the questions specified in the application form.

Refusal to register a marriage:

Consulates may refuse to register a marriage.

Marriages between the following persons are not permitted:

1) close relatives (parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, brothers and sisters by birth and by step (having a common father or mother));

2) close adoptive parents and adopted children;

3) persons in whom one or both of the persons applying for the marriage are married to someone else;

4) persons in whom one or both of the persons applying for the marriage are deemed by the court to be incapacitated due to mental illness or incapacity.

State fee:

According to Article 16.3 of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On State Fees” of 2001, a state fee of SEK 150 is charged for the registration of a marriage.
